Do I Smell Pumpkin Spice…

With fall arriving on this cool morning in October, we are seeing more and more pumpkin spice in every consumer product you can find. The marketing gurus are heavy-handed this year. From fashions for humans and pets to scents and accessories, from home décor to yard art, it is like being bombarded by locusts…it is everywhere!

Robyn and Scarlett pull out their calendars and start planning their fall adventures. They look through magazines they have saved, pull out recipes they have wanted to try or the old-time favorites that are mainstays, they scour through the internet for places to go and events to attend, or that perfect new cocktail to try at home. Getting into the mood they exchange gifts, a mini tabletop pumpkin with kaleidoscope lighting inside for Scarlett and a painting of a bright orange rustic pumpkin on wood for Robyn’s door. They are off to a seasonal start. Their calendars start filling up with dates of the new writing group they have formed in Bardstown (Scarlett’s home base) and the shopping adventures in Montevallo, Alabama (Robyn’s roost). Where will they enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas this year? Back to the internet to see what is happening in each city first.
Holiday invitations have already arrived. Decisions will be made soon.

Two things are already in place, Scarlett will make the infamous Libby’s pumpkin pie. Robyn will bake her delicious mincemeat pie. Both are super popular with those whom they have converted to love two pies when people said they did not want to even try to see if they liked them. One taste of either pie is sure to turn a hater into a lover of both. Many a guest has had that glint in their eye that spoke the words, “You did make the pie? It would not be the same holiday without it.”

Funny how we associate food with holiday memories, turkey, ham, potato salad, dressing, baked yams, ambrosia, Christmas cookies, chocolate cake, Bourbon balls, apple cider, mulled wine, truffles, Wassail, and champagne to name a few. But the gathering of loved ones in celebration is what we remember the most. We want to continue traditions in this hustle-bustle world of distance from friends and family. We want the good old times back.

So here is to old favorites, full calendars, decorations, and friendships old and new. Fall makes for new adventures and memories for these two Thoroughbroads. Those are the best gifts anyone could ask for. And in one word, that gift is LOVE.
